Japanese needling technique use thinner needles with a shallower needle insertion. Most patients find that these treatments are relaxing and cause minimal discomfort. Often patients are not even aware that needles have been inserted. Along with this style there are many non-insertive techniques that are used, such as Moxa, Tuina, Shakuju, magnets, Gua Sha and cupping. Children respond very well to this style of treatment.
With a Japanese approach we rely heavily on palpation techniques. There is palpation of the radial pulse, palpation of the Hara (abdomen) and the acupuncture points along the channels. Years ago when acupuncture was founded in Japan it is said that most of the practitioners were blind. They used their sense of touch to help treat their patient. Their ability to palpate and diagnosis based on touch is seen today within this style of treatment.
Japanese treatments are usually divided into two steps: “root” and “local” treatments. The root treatment focuses on the body’s energetic and structural imbalances, while as the local treatment focuses on the patient’s main complaint. Often these two steps are completed within the same treatment time. For most acute issues, a local treatment could be enough. However, with a more complex or chronic condition the root treatment will focus on helping the body align itself and once the imbalances have been address and corrected, the body’s self healing abilities will be activated and healing will begin.
